Joe S. Reyes P.E., LEED AP

Managing Principal

Joe Reyes is a unique engineer. He understands drafting, graphics, 3D modeling and construction – which means he can easily visualize how a system fits together before design begins and evaluate the constructability during design. He has also designed a wide variety of systems throughout his career and utilizes this vast knowledge to provide solutions for projects that are often extremely challenging. In fact, Joe has built a reputation for being someone who can develop elegant, innovative, and unique engineering solutions for even the most difficult of assignments.

However, Joe is also someone who can comfortably, yet effectively relay technical information in a simple, user-friendly manner. Between his varied project expertise and his MBA background, Joe offers a deep understanding of the tradeoffs associated with first costs and long-term recurring costs, and his recommendations are always developed to align with the strategic goals of his clients. Joe works collaboratively to build solid relationships with other design consultants, contractors, and owners, which is critical during a challenging project design. Joe has designed large chilled water systems up to 8,000 tons for both university campus and mission critical applications, including enterprise Tier 4 data centers. He also offers expertise in the design of critical temperature and humidity-controlled environments. This unique knowledge base has led to guest lecture invitations to present on HVAC for Preservation Environments at the UT-Austin, School of Information. Joe is naturally curious and invests time to learn about new building science technologies to better understand the cohesion between architecture and engineering.

Before founding Waterloo|MEP in 2022, Joe began his HVAC career at MEP Engineering as a young EIT in 1996. After three years he relocated to work for a large, international architecture/engineering firm. Joe rejoined MEP in 2010 with a greatly expanded knowledge base, including seasoned project management, programming, and commissioning skills. In addition to over 20 years of experience in the design of HVAC and plumbing systems, Joe has embraced the goals of sustainable design, which he incorporates into projects wherever appropriate. As a LEED Accredited Professional since 2003, he has a comprehensive knowledge of the LEED Green Building Rating System and is proficient in the application of sustainable design principles.

On a personal note, Joe is quite handy, and can often be found tinkering on something around the house. He enjoys building and/or re-building all sorts of things from outdoor structures to vintage musical instruments. Being from Austin, he enjoys experiencing local live music and he takes every opportunity to play music with friends on weekends (piano, Hammond organ, guitar, or sax). Above all, Joe enjoys spending time with his awesome family.
